Things to do
We love Chagford – but then we are a bit biased! A pretty Stannary town in the heart of Dartmoor National Park, it has lots to offer and is a lovely place to browse with a great array of shops. The surrounding scenery is fabulous and there are wonderful walks in every direction. There are several clothes shops and an excellent jewellery shop, plus two of the best traditional family-run stores (Bowden’s and Webber’s) you will find anywhere in the country. Chagford has it all!
The next nearest moorland town, about 4 miles away. Although locals will proudly proclaim it as a town Moretonhampstead is essentially a village in character and is located at almost the exact geographical centre of the county. As well as its main street of shops, where you will find a very useful visitor information centre, it also has a Motor Museum and various artisan studios, well worth a mooch around.
The cathedral city of Exeter is half an hour away and has all the usual city amenities. The ancient centre of the city is dominated by the cathedral, while a new shopping centre – Princesshay – offers good shopping and restaurants.
The Devon Guild of Craftsmen
The Devon Guild of Craftsmen is the largest contemporary crafts centre in South West with the Jubilee Gallery, Craft Shop and The Terrace cafe in the grade II listed Riverside Mill in Bovey Tracey, about 10 miles away.
House of Marbles, Bovey Tracey
There’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy at the House of Marbles. The glass blowing is fascinating to watch, the shop is very tempting and you mustn’t miss ‘Snookie’ the largest marble run in the United Kingdom and possibly the world!
Moretonhampstead Motor Museum
Moretonhampstead Motor Museum is home to a collection of over 80 vintage vehicles, from Victorian horse-drawn carts to cars, motorcycles and vans. A fascinating collection and a real nostalgia trip!
Chagford Open Air Pool
There’s nothing quite like the fresh water feeling! Chagford’s outdoor pool is in a beautiful setting and open from 23rd May until early September.
Miniature Pony Centre, Dartmoor
The miniature Pony Centre is a great place to entertain the children, lots of different animals to pet and play areas both inside and out.
Steam Trains from Buckfastleigh
Travel back in time and rekindle your memories of steam trains on the lovely South Devon Railway! A lovely few hours reminiscing as you travel close to the River Dart from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.
